What you should always pay attention to is that you touch the skin with the (bottom) of the cutting blade, this prevents the upper movable cutting blade from touching the skin. So suppose you hold the clipper upside down and press against your skin; then you have to make sure that the bottom (where the cord is) points up (elbow up). If you hold the bottom of the trimmer down and therefore your arm along your body, the movable part of the cutting blade first touches the skin and you have the chance that the trimmer will open the skin.
